How to Promote your Website – Website Marketing

There are so many people out there with their own website, there are many types of websites and all of them are unique in their own way, but the one thing that all website owners have in common is the hope to be successful in promoting their site and getting ranked well. Whether you have a:

  1. Blog about your hobby –  such as photography, cooking, knitting, poetry etc.
  2. A business website featuring the services you provide
  3. An e-commerce website that depends on high quality traffic
  4. An online magazine

Or any other type of website, the most important thing for you is getting ranked for important keywords.

When speaking to many business owners i constantly get similar answers when asking them how people find them online:

“They search he company name in Google an we are ranked first (!!!)”

Well… where do I begin…?

Understanding that you need to Promote your Website

The first step in promoting your website is UNDERSTANDING that you need to promote it. The fact that someone could just go into Google and search for your company name and find you is great, although hardly a fraction of what should actually be happening. That just means that you have a unique business / website name and the site exists – nothing more.

Imagine this hypothetical scenario: You have a shoe store in the mall and have 2 options of promoting your store:

  1. Whenever anyone goes to the mall information and asks where they have shoe stores, the information teller will give your store name first.
  2. ONLY whenever anyone goes to the mall information and asks where they can find YOUR SHOE STORE will the teller give your store location.

Which of the 2 options do you think will get you more traffic and shoe sales? That’s right… no. 1 is the way to go.

Think of the online world and Google as the teller at the mall, you could be promoted if you know how to promote your website properly.

Step 1 – Know your Neighborhood

Keywords – Promoting your site name is nice but hardly enough. You need to do some keyword research. Find the best keywords you can use. There are many places to do keyword research, the first place i would look is at my competitors. Chances are your site has a competitor that promotes himself better than you, so just look at what he’s doing ans start getting ideas. Open up a new excel spreadsheet and start filling it with ideas and notes. You can break your keywords into categories, such as (staying with that shoe store example):

  1. Brand names – Nike, Reebok, Timberland, and so on.
  2. Shoe types – High tops. Sport shoes, High heels, and so on.
  3. Sizes – 8-10, 10-12, and so on.
  4. Variables – Wide shoes, Narrow shoes, Orthopedic shoes, and so on.

The list can go on and on and it all depends on the specific site and what you can add to it.

Knowing exactly what keywords to use can be considered an art, it’s really not as easy as 1,2,3 and sites that are actively promoting their site with SEO usually tend to change the keywords every once in a while until they get the correct formula.

When you finish building your list of keywords, run them through the Google Keyword Tool. Decide if you are happy with the list or choose some similar higher / lower volume keywords from the list.

Step 2 – Make sure your Site is Healthy

A healthy site has a much better chance of ranking well. I know, your next question will be:

“What are the components of a healthy site?”

There is no simple answer to that question unfortunately and there are so many components that are important for a healthy website. Here are a few tips to send you in the correct direction.

  1. Site: – Go to Google search and type in “” (change with your site name) and look at how Google sees your pages. This list is all the pages of your site that Google indexed, make sure they look correct. Make sure there are about the correct amount of pages, look for text errors, and whatever else you can find.
  2. General site errors – There are several free tools at our disposal that give us a lot of data of errors on our site:
  3. Website crawlers – There are 2 website crawlers that i use personally but there are many more:
    • Screaming Frog – Crawls the site and pulls out a lot of information such as http status, meta title, h1, h2 etc.
    • XENU – Works a little differently than screaming frog, export the spreadsheet, it makes life easier.

I could go on and on but that should do for now. These tips should keep you pretty busy.

Step 3 – Actively Promote

This step really never ends and is pretty important in building your brand online. There are literally endless places to promote yourself, i will give you a few to start out with.

But before that, you need to understand the importance of promoting your site on the web. Yes, ultimately it’s so as many people as possible see your site and brand name, but not only.

Google and other search engines have very sophisticated algorithms that determine what sites are most relevant on a given search term based on lots of parameters that we don’t really know, or do know partially. What we do know is that one of the most important parameters is backlinks. Because we know that they are important they are also very much abused and every once in a while Google updates the algorithm and tries to catch spammers that try to abuse the system. My 2 cents – use in moderation.

Some of the most common and most effective places to promote your site and add a link are:

  1. Social networks – Facebook, Twitter, Google plus, Linkedin, Pinterest and whatever other network you use. Be active, add a business page where possible, add great content and get people to notice you, follow you and share your posts.
  2. Professional blogs – Follow blogs in your niche, comment when possible and reach out to people in your niche. Some blogs will enable you to guest blog, keep that in mind.
  3. Forums – There are basically forums for any kind of sub niche that exists, find them, log in every once in a while and help people out, of course you should add a link when you do so.
  4. Create amazing content – The way backlinks are suppose to work and the way they were is intended is Organically. Meaning, people find your content and decide to share it, without you doing anything to promote it. It’s hard, but it can happen. If you add amazing content to your site – it can happen! And it will promote your site immensely.

Obviously this isn’t everything. In order to promote your website correctly there are so many things that can and should be done but it never ends.

If you follow the tips in this post, you should be good to go and have a much better idea of what needs to be done than you had before.

Good luck!
